Destination Wedding Photographers & Speakers at WPPI 2016.

Chio García y Dennis Berti, fotógrafos de bodas con sede en Cabo San Lucas, México. Una pareja que trabajan juntos y forman parte de los ponentes Latinos quienes presentaran este año en la convención de fotografía WPPI, Martes 8 de Marzo 2016 cual se llevara acabo en Las Vegas. Ambos se especializan en Bodas de destino. Les compartimos esta corta entrevista donde nos cuentan su visión creativa, como empezaron, tips y también algunas de sus increíbles imágenes. Los invitamos a que dejen sus comentarios. 

Chio Garcia and Dennis Berti are part of the International Workshops which will be presented at WPPI 2016. Their presentation will be presented in the Spanish language. They both reside in Cabo San Lucas Mexico where they specialize in destination weddings. Here we share a short interview discussing their creative view, how they got started, tips, and some of their amazing photographs.

–Dennis, eres Italiano, como fue que llegaste a vivir en México? Dennis, you are Italian, how is it that you ended up living in Mexico?

Dennis– En barco jaja. Trabaje en diferentes hoteles y cruceros que me hicieron conocer diferentes lugares del mundo, hasta que un día llegué a México y me gusto bastante, tanto que decidí regresar para quedarme a vivir.  By boat, hahaha… I worked in different hotels and cruise ships which took me to many different parts of the world, until one day when I reached Mexico and I really liked it, so much that I decided to return and stay to live there.

-Cuenten un poco sobre ustedes dos, como se conocieron, como llegaron los dos al mundo de la fotografía de Bodas. Tell us a little about you two, how did you both meet and how where you introduced to the wedding photography world.

Dennis- Yo llevaba ya 5 años viviendo y trabajando en bodas en Playa de Carmen y a unos pocos días de mudarme al otro lado de la república conocí a Chio, pasó poco tiempo para que los dos nos encontráramos viviendo juntos en Los Cabos y ahí fue donde los dos unimos fuerzas y juntos nos metimos de lleno a la fotografía de bodas de destino.   I was already living and working doing weddings for 5 years at Playa del Carmen, and a few days after moving to the other side of the republic, I met Chio. It was a shortly after, that we both found ourselves living together in Los Cabos and it was there, where we joined forces, and together we immersed ourselves in wedding destination photography.

-Se dedican más que todo a las bodas de destino, como fue que decidieron especializarse en este mercado? You dedicate yourselves mostly to destination weddings, how did you decide you wanted to specialize in this market?

Dennis– Desde que llegué a playa del Carmen comencé a trabajar en una empresa grande de fotografía de bodas, ahí me hice de experiencia con más de 600 bodas y los clientes eran en su mayoría americanos, así que puedo decir que prácticamente mis comienzos fueron en bodas de destino, es por eso que ahora seguimos especializándonos en estas.
   Since I first arrived to Playa del Carmen, I started to working for a large wedding photography company. There I acquired experience doing over 600 weddings, and the majority of clients were Americans, so I can practically say that my start was in destination weddings, this is why now, we specialize in this.

-Como es la comunicación previa con sus clientes, siendo que la mayoría son extranjeros? How is the initial consultation with your clients, since the majority are foreigners?

Chio– Hay muchos clientes con quienes solo nos comunicamos por correo, llamadas de voz o videoconferencia pero a la mayoría de ellos los conocemos por primera vez el día de la boda o un día antes. Es lo que tienen las bodas de destino, no hay oportunidad de hacer citas en vivo como cuando los clientes son locales.
    There are many clients with whom we only communicate by email, video conference calls, or voicemail, but the majority of them we meet for the first time on the day of their wedding, or one day before. This is how destination weddings are, there is not an opportunity to make appointments and meet in person like when it is a local wedding.

-Que es la fotografía para cada uno de los dos? What is photography for each one of you?

Dennis– Puedo decir que para mi es mi vida, tomo fotos con mi cerebro y mis ojos aunque no tenga cámara, siempre estoy encuadrando mentalmente, haciendo click con los ojos. Al hacer fotos para nosotros o las novias, es documentar y dejar un legado de momentos y emociones.

  I can say that for me, it is my life, I take photos with my mind and my eyes even when I don’t have a camera, I am always mentally framing, and clicking with my eyes. In making photos for ourselves or the brides, it is to document and leave a legacy of moments and emotions.

Chio– La fotografía para mi es expresión de sentimientos, de ideas y de cómo veo el mundo, yo disfruto mucho contar historias con imágenes, a manera documental o abstracta. La fotografía nos permite plasmar en imágenes la personalidad de cada individuo y eso es lo que hace a cada fotografía que sea única.   Photography for me is an expression of feelings, of ideas and how I see the world, I really enjoy telling stories with images, documentary or abstract. Photography allows us to capture in images, the personality of each individual and that is what makes each photograph unique.

-Porque elegiste la fotografía de Bodas y no otro tipo de fotografía? Why did you choose wedding photography?

Dennis– Por mucho tiempo hice fotografía de muchos tipos, hasta que llegue a México y me encontré con el mundo de las bodas de destino y me encanto, porque involucra el documentar historias, un mundo de emociones y arte al mismo tiempo. For a long time I did many types of photography, until I arrived to Mexico and I found the world of destination weddings and I loved it, because it involves documenting stories, a world of emotions and art at the same time.

–Que estarían haciendo si no fueran fotógrafos? What would you be doing if not being a photographer?

Dennis– Yo seguiría siendo fotógrafo jajaja. Seguramente sería guitarrista de una banda de rock.
   I would still be a photographer…hahaha. Surely I would be a guitarist for a rock band.

Chio- Yo estaría haciendo cualquier cosa relacionada al diseño; moda, interiores, lo artístico siempre fue lo mio.  I would be doing anything related to design; fashion, interiors, the artistic always was my thing.

–Que tan importante es contar la historia en sus retratos contrario a lo que es lo técnico? How important is telling the story in your images as opposed to the technical aspect?

D/C– Para nosotros es mucho más importante captar las emociones y la espontaneidad del momento. Creemos que se necesita una buena técnica aprendida para ser más reactivo y enfocarse en la historia y no en el asunto técnico. Claro que preferimos una imagen fuera de foco o sin las condiciones perfectas siempre y cuando se capture algo que no volverá a repetirse.    For us it’s much more important to capture emotions and the spontaneity of the moment. We believe a good technique needs to be learned to be more reactive, focusing on the story and not on the technical part.

–Que determina la composición que usan en sus tomas? En qué momento deciden esto? What determines the composition you use in your images?

Chio– Nosotros trabajamos dependiendo los factores que se nos presenten en el momento pero creemos que un buen uso de la luz y el continuo aprendizaje visual es lo que nos permite crear imágenes diferentes en determinados momentos.
    We work depending on the factors which are presented in the moment, but we believe that a good use of light and continuos visual learning is what permits us to create different images in certain moments.

-Como se complementan uno al otro al trabajar juntos en una boda? How do you compliment each other while working together?

Dennis– Como equipo somos muy independientes, pero de algún modo siempre trabajamos como dos mentes paralelas, después de 5 años haciendo bodas juntos prácticamente ya sabemos que piensa uno y el otro.     As a team we are very independent, but in some ways we always work like two parallel minds, after 5 years of doing weddings together, we practically know what the other is thinking.

–Cual equipo llevan en su Bolso? What’s it your camera bag?

Dennis– Llevamos una sola mochila para el equipo que usamos los dos. Dentro de ésta encuentras 3 cuerpos, uno cada quien  más una de respaldo, 4 lentes y 3 flashes. Tratamos de ir lo más ligero posible.

 We only take one bag for the equipment we both use. Inside you will find three camera bodies, one for each plus a backup, 4 lenses and 3 flashes.

-Hay una tendencia hacia el renacimiento de film. Están usando o les interesaría usar film en el futuro cercano? There is a tendency towards the revival of film. Are you using or are you interested in using film in the near future?

Dennis– Por el momento no lo hemos considerado. At the moment we have not considered it.

-Quieres hablar como manejas tu post producción?  How do you manage your post production?

Dennis– Chio es quien se ocupa de la selección de fotos y yo soy quién se ocupa de retocarlas y dejarlas listas, Uso Lightroom 6 y usualmente el tiempo que nos tardamos en retocar una boda promedio son 10-16 horas.  Chio is the one who is in charge of selecting the images and I am the one who retouches and leaves them ready. I use Lightroom 6 and usually the time it takes us to retouch a wedding is about 10-16 hours.

-Como es tu comunicación y relación con tus sujetos a la hora de fotografiar? How is your communication and relation with your subjects at the time you photograph them?

Chio– Procuramos no interactuar demasiado con ellos en los momentos importantes de la boda, esto para no modificar las situaciones que estén sucediendo, excepto en la sesión de pareja. Nuestro objetivo es estar en todos lados pero siempre buscando pasar desapercibidos.   We try to not interact too much with them in the important parts of the wedding, this so we don’t modify the situations which might be happening, except for the couple session. Our objective is to be at all places but always wanting to pass unnoticed.

–La tecnología está cambiando demasiado rápido y solo estamos empezando a ver dónde nos llevaran las herramientas creativas. Es importante para ti la tecnología? Technology is changing very rapidly and we are only beginning to see where the creative tools might take us. Is technology important for you?

Dennis– Siempre trato de estar actualizado sobre todo con las herramientas que necesitamos para nuestro trabajo. Me gusta saber sobre los nuevos equipos para ver los beneficios y mejoras que pueden ser de provecho para nuestro trabajo, la tecnología avanza tan rápido que no queremos quedarnos atrás y también es importante que nuestros clientes así lo sientan pues los resultados son para ellos.   I always try to be updated especially with the tools which we need for our work. I like to know about new equipment to learn about the improvements and benefits which might be an advantage for our work, technology advances so fast that we do not want to stay behind and also, it’s important that our clients know this since the results are for them.

-Cuales fotógrafos son tu base de inspiración? Which photographers inspire you?

Dennis– Alex Webb, Elliot Erwitt, David Lachapelle, Bill Brandt, Oliviero Toscani, Trent Parke, Steve McCurry y Nils Jorgensen. Koci Hernandez

Chio- Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Fan Ho, Guy Bourdin, Alex Webb, Paolo Roversi, Steven Meisel, Brooke Shaden y muchos otros fotógrafos emergentes.

– El consejo más importante que pueden dar sobre cómo hacer propaganda al negocio y como atraer más clientes. The most important advice you can give us on marketing and attracting more clients?

Dennis– Ser sinceros en la forma de trabajar y mostrar su trabajo.  Be sincere in the way you work and show your work.

-Que es lo más difícil hoy en día de la fotografía de bodas? What is most difficult today in wedding photography?

Dennis– Enseñar a los clientes que existe un mundo creativo en la fotografía de bodas, quitarles de la cabeza el estereotipo de las poses clásicas.  Showing clients that a world of creative photography exists in wedding photography, taking away from their minds the stereotypical classic poses.

-Alguien que ya haya muerto, a quien les hubiese encantado fotografiar? Por que?  Someone dead whom you would have loved to photograph? Why?

Dennis– Siendo un gran apasionado de la música tal vez diría Jimmy Hendrix, por lo que le ha dejado a la música, de igual modo sus facciones y su magia al tocar, me hubiera gustado hacer un retrato mientras tocaba. Being passionate about music I would have to say Jimmy Hendrix for what he has brought to music, his features, his magic as he played, I would have liked to take a portrait of him as he played.

Chio– Mi primer pensamiento es Robin Williams, me hubiera encantado fotografiar a una persona con ese nivel de carisma que lo caracterizaba.   My first thought is Robin Williams, I would have loved to photograph someone with that level of charisma which characterized him.

-Si pudieses estar en cualquier lugar del mundo, donde irías y que estarías fotografiando? If you could photograph anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Dennis– Diría que en cualquier parte dónde haya alguna tribu en extinción, es decir personas que no viven conforme a nuestra cultura.
 I would have to say anywhere in the world where there is a tribe in extinction, in other words, persons who do not live conforming to our culture.

-El mejor consejo que puedes darle a otro fotógrafo? Best advice to other photographers?

Dennis– Tomar muchas fotos todo el tiempo y de todo momento. Rodearse siempre de gente creativa y mirar muchas películas, arte, cualquier cosa que te motive.
 Take many photos all the time and of each moment.   Always surround yourselves with creative people and see many movies, art, anything that motivates you.

Chio- Dejar la soberbia y envidias de lado. Viajar y juntar experiencias pues de éstas es dónde saldrá tu obra. Leave your pride and envy aside. Travel and obtain experiences, this is where your art work will come from.

–Hablen un poco sobre el taller que se presentara en la convención WPPI 2016. Tell us about your seminar at WPPI 2016.

Dennis- Estamos muy contentos de compartir en ésta “Plus Class” que será el día Martes 8 de Marzo. Hablaremos de técnica, configuraremos las cámaras para sacar su mayor aprovechamiento, haremos muchos ejercicios prácticos y vamos a compartir nuestros métodos para movernos en el campo de la fotografía documental de bodas.
  We are very happy to share in the “Plus Class” which will be Tuesday March 8th. We will talk about technique, we will configure the cameras to have a mayor advantage, many practical exercises, and we will share our methods to move into the world of  documentary photography.

-Quieren agregar algo más? Anything you would like to add?

D/C– Por último decir que vayan a muchas conferencias, que enseñen su trabajo y permitan que éste sea criticado. Convivan con más fotógrafos y compartan, háganse de colegas por todo el mundo que esto les dé la oportunidad de viajar y convivir con otras personas que hablan el mismo idioma de la fotografía, que es lo que tanto nos apasiona.    Lastly,  to attend  many conferences, show your work and permit your work to be critiqued. Spend time with more photographers and share, make friends all over the world, this will give you opportunities to travel and coexist with others who speak the same photography language, which is what we are so passionate about.
