Seguimos con esta serie de entrevistas a fotógrafos Latinos quienes presentaran en la convención WPPI 2016. Esta vez tenemos el gusto de presentarles al fotógrafo Mexicano, Lazaro Casas. Con un estilo muy diferente a lo habitual, a crecido rápidamente en Mexico como un experto en la fotografía de Quinceañeras. Ha impartido numerosos talleres de Quinceañeras en Mexico, Sudamerica y Estados Unidos. Le invitamos a conocerlo un poco mejor mediante esta corta entrevista, y también a que lo conozcan en persona en la convención de fotógrafos WPPI, este 8 de Marzo 8:30 am – 10:00am 2016.
We continue with these series of interviews with Latino photographers who will present the WPPI convention in 2016. This time we are pleased to present the Mexican photographer, Lazaro Casas. With a very different style than usual, he has grown rapidly in Mexico as an expert in Quinceañera (Sweet 15 Debut) photography. He has given numerous workshops related to Quinceañera photography in Mexico, South America and the United States. We invite you to know him a little better through this short interview, and also invite you to get to know him in person, at the photographers convention, WPPI this March 2016.
-Que es la fotografía para ti? What is photography for you? Es la manera de expresarme mediante un momento o un instante, hacer ver al mundo el amor y la felicidad. It is a way to express myself through a moment or an instant, a way to show love, happiness and have the world seen.
-Porque elegiste especializarte en la fotografía de Quince? Why did you choose to specialize in Sweet 15 photography? Es un mercado que me encanta, para mi son casi igual a las bodas, yo les llamo las Tiny Little Brides, tienen la misma emoción que una novia para su boda. It is a market which I love, for me it is almost the same as a wedding, I call them tiny little brides, they have the same emotion as a bride has, towards her wedding.
–Como es tu comunicación y relación con tus sujetos a la hora de fotografiar? How is your communication and relation with your subjects at the time you photograph them? Mi manera de plasmar la fotografía en ellas es su escénica, no trato de hacerlas ver algo que no son, simplemente son ellas, ni las disfrazo ni las hago sentir algo que no vayan a estar cómodas, trato de ser un teen mas, hablar su mismo idioma, conocer todo lo que les gusta, tengo que estar metido al 100 en ese mercado de las teens. My way of capturint photography is through their essence, I do not attempt to make them seem something they are not, simply be themselves. Nor do I disguise them or make them do something that is not going to be comfortable for them, I try to be just another teen, speak their same language, know what they like, I have to be 100 immersed in the teen market.
-Desde la sesión de fotos hasta el día del evento, que estrategias usas para tener el éxito que tienes hoy en día en este mercado? From the photo session to the day of the event, what strategies do you use to have reached the success you have today in this market? El servicio al cliente es la clave, tenemos que estar consientes que somos un proveedor mas, a veces a muchos se nos olvida y nace “ El Rockstar “ , nuestra clave es el servicio, la atención y el contacto con el cliente. The key is customer service, we have to be conscience that we are only one more provider of a service, sometimes many of us forget and then the “Rockstar is born”.
-Que estarías haciendo si no fueses fotógrafo? What would you be doing if not being a photographer?Hubiera seguido en el ámbito del marketing. Me hubiera gustado mucho ser futbolista jeje. I would have continued in marketing. I would have really liked to be a football player. hehe.
–Que tan importante es contar la historia en tus retratos contrario lo que es lo técnico? How important is telling the story in your images as opposed to the technical aspect? No es tan importante, es todo! A veces los momentos y las emociones superan la técnica, contar la historia de ellas es en todo lo que me tengo que enfocar. It’s not too important, it is everything! Sometimes the moments and the emotions overcome the technical, telling their story is the only thing I should focus on.
-Que determina la composición que usas en tus tomas? En que momento decides esto? What determines the composition you use in your images? Trato de que mis retratos en ellas sean lo mas limpio posible, trato de resaltarlas mucho, mas que jugar con el paisaje, hago lo posible por resaltar mas la belleza de ellas. I try to make my portraits of them as clean as possible, I try to bring them out a lot, more than playing around with the landscape, I do whatever is possible to emphasize their beauty.

-Hay una tendencia hacia el renacimiento de film. Estas usando o te interesaría usar film en el futuro cercano?There is a tendency towards the revival of film. Are you using or are you interested in using film in the near future?Tengo un trauma por usar el film, siempre lo quiero usar pero para uso personal mas que para el negocio, espero empaparme de todo lo que se pueda, conozco muchos amigos muy buenos en film y quiero aprender de ellos. I have a trauma in using film, I always want to use it but for personal use, more than for the business, I hope to immerse myself as much as I can, I know many friends who are really good at film and I would like to learn from them.
–Quieres hablar como manejas tu post producción? How do you manage your post production? Para mi post uso Lr y Ps, trato de hacerle lo menos que se pueda, siempre tratar desde la cámara hacerlo bien, aunque con la Nikon juego mas por el rango dinámico que tiene y uso los acabados de mastinlabs y redleaf. For my post I use LR and PS, I try to use it as little as possible, always try to get it right from the camera, although with the Nikon I play more at the dynamic range which it has and use the mastinlabs and redleaf finishes.
– La tecnología esta cambiando demasiado rápido y solo estamos empezando a ver donde nos llevaran las herramientas creativas. Es importante para ti la tecnología? Technology is changing very fast and we are only beginning to see where these new creative tools can lead us. What do you predict for the next five years in photography? Es muy importante, cada dia sale algo nuevo, y a veces nos damos cuenta del cambio cuando ya volvieron a actualizare, viene una generación muy fuerte y muy creativa y tenemos que estar preparados para eso. It’s very important, each day something new comes out, and we sometimes find out about the change when they announce an update, there is a very strong and very creative generation coming and we must be prepared for that.
-Cuales fotógrafos son tu base de inspiración? Which photographers inspire you?Me encanta el trabajo de Annie Leibovitz, David Lachapelle, James Natchwey, Steve McCurry y nuestros mexicanos como Fer, Citla, Dany, entre muchos amigos que me inspiran mucho. All of these among many other friends who inspire me much.
El consejo mas importante que puedes dar sobre como hacer propaganda al negocio y como atraer mas clientes. -On marketing your business, what is the most important tip you can give someone today? Siempre estar presente, tienes que estar siempre en la mente de tu consumidor, trato de siempre mostrar algo aunque sea a diario, ya hay mucho bombardeo de imágenes por todos lados pero si sabes filtrar a quien le tiene que llegar, puedes tener mucho mejores resultados. Always be present, you must always be present the consumers mind, I always try to show something daily. There already is a bombardment of images everywhere, but if you know how to filter whom you must target, your results will be much better.
Como fotógrafo, que es lo mas difícil hoy en día en el mercado de Quince Años? -What is the most challenging, in photographing events today? Es una linea muy delgada ya que las generaciones de ahora son muy abiertas contra las de antes, las teens ya están muy revolucionadas, solo que no se nos debe de olvidar que tienen 14 años todavía, no hacerlas ver como de 20. There is a very fine line since todays generations are much more open than the ones before, teens are very revolutionized, but we should not forget that they are still 14 years old, don’t make them look like they are 20.
Alguien que ya halla muerto, a quien te hubiese encantado fotografiar? Porque?-Anyone dead, you would have loved to photograph and why? Mi abuelo, fue el único que no conocí, pero que hace poco me di cuenta de su amor por la fotografía y eso me marco mucho, y quiero preguntarle muchas cosas. My grandfather, he was the only one I did not meet, but only a short time ago I found out of his love for photography and that really left a mark on me, I would like to ask him many questions.
Si pudieses estar en cualquier lugar del mundo, donde irías y que estarías fotografiando? If you could, where in the world would you be, and what would you be shooting? Tengo tantas ganas de conocer Egipto, Jerusalén o la india, creo que conocer la cultura y fotografiar su gente, es uno de mis sueños. I would really like to go to Egypt, Jerusalem or India, I think getting to know their culture and photograph it’s people, is one of my dreams.
El mejor consejo que puedes darle a otro fotógrafo para tener éxito en el mercado de Quinceañeras? -Best advice you have for other photographers? Que primero te tiene que gustar ese mercado, no hacerlo nada mas por negocio, tienes que tener una sensibilidad para tratar tanto con la niña, a la mama y el papa. Tenemos tres jefes, no nada mas uno. That first you must really like this market, don’t do it only for business, you must have sensitivity to treat the girl, the mother and the father. We have three bosses not only one.
-Finalmente, cuenta un poco de que se tratara tu taller “Believe in Fifteens” en WPPI. Finally tell us a little about your seminar at WPPI. Tratare de compartir todo lo poco o mucho que sabemos de ese mercado, compartir nuestras experiencias tanto de éxito como de fracaso en el mercado, y ayudarles a elegir estrategias correctas para el mismo. I will try to share the little or much that I know of this market, share experiences in success as well as failures in the market, and help you choose the correct strategies.
-Quieres agregar algo mas? Want to add something else?
Que para mi es un sueño hecho realidad, estar en un evento donde me siento tan chiquito a lado de tanto gigante, es para mi algo increíble, y que también le quiero agradecer a Cris, My Love, por tanto apoyo a mis locuras, mis sueños y mi trabajo. La amo! That for me it is a dream come true to be at an event where I feel so little next to so many giants, it is for me something incredible, and that I would like to thank Cris, my love, for supporting my craziness, my dreams and mi work. I love her!
