We would like to thank Ariel for contributing this first part of a series of articles to come, titled “The Philosophy of Social Video” where he proposes to define a new branch of  philosophy, that of  Social Video.  Ariel resides in Argentina and is a regular contributor to Punto Magazine, this is the first of his articles to be translated to the english language.

The Philosophy of Social Video-I

By: Ariel Garcia  Videographer

Introduction

My project may judge me as ambitious, as it dares to propose (and usher in) a new branch of philosophy: “Philosophy of Social Video”. I admit that the intent will need more than one note, so I have decided to number them, this time, and given that this is the first writing, I have entitled this first writing as Philosophy of Social Video 1.

1. Concept

In my statement, the term “philosophy” does not aim to understand with clarity and precision all the aspects related to the audiovisual producer, but to reflect on its role in addressing the social scenario and address a set of facts and circumstances with which he encounters as one fulfills its work.

As I have explained on other occasions, when I say or write “social video” I do so understanding the term in its colloquial sense, because if we accept the concept in all of its entire length we should then admit that social video could encompass the vast majority of the existing, including those who have recorded the activity of a bee colony.

2. The Approach

In my approach, the Philosophy of Social Video is conceived as “a system” which studies how filmmakers ” create” social video therefore deepening not only the context by exercising his work, but also the ultimate purpose of the final art work he composes”.

In my view, clear and concrete answers to certain questions will allow us to recognize and update the mission of the photographer and the videographer in the community which makes possible its existence, as well as get closer to the true extent of his role, without underestimating or mythicizing. In addition, among other things, I will propose to revise the criteria by which we consider ourselves suitable professionals.

I share with the group of filmmakers and photographers an intellectual exercise, that when enriched by their input and points of view, might widen our gaze, redefine criteria, establish new categories and encourage the search for arguments in other areas.

To delve into this path it is necessary to expose some criteria; later on, and from the way I interpret the audiovisual universe, I will be referring my deductions.

I will start with the Videomaker, that “social being” who constructs ” work of art”, in spanish, we use the word “Obra” a word that comes from “opera” (working), related to “operarius” (one whom works).

3. The Videomaker

The events which occur do not speak for themselves but do so by the filmmaker, to whom the client has bestowed upon the “power” to narrate.  It is for this reason. why I would like to focus on the individual who “writes the story”, the Videographer, responsible for  “re-constructing reality” (re-building) within the range of his work

The term “power” written in the preceding paragraph, refers to the power the filmmaker has over its production, to that power which lets him choose, discard, edit, select, prefer, set aside, omit, sort, combine and edit. That plural power closely related to the privileges wherein each professional counts with, from the time he begins to compose the video.

But which is the object, of where the power of the Videographer falls? The answer is: audiovisual language or, more precisely, his required expressions: that of image and sound.

4. The image and sound

It is possible to notice in what way in human communities, images, signs (words) and sounds are “multi accentuated”; this means that much of the material with which the  videomaker opertates with is “loaded” with ideology, from diverse social values. The audiovisual experience is manifested in a space occupied by significances and social conventions.

The statement also supports the conclusion that in our realizations two languages are superimposed: the unexpressed, where we communicate through the means of a verbal  code or not, and that of audiovisual construction, linked to its concepts and fundamentals.

Not forgetting the incidence of technological innovations and ideological changes, it is coherent to claim that the world of significance where the videographer interacts with his peers, and his ability to decipher it, condition and determine his style.

5. style

Each style reveals a worldview and, in a certain way, an obligatory way to see and interpret an event. And with this I recall Bajtín, with whom the language (audiovisual expression for us) takes the form of a social weapon “reflects reality, but also constructs and determines it.”

Style is an aesthetic expression of perennial nature, very prone to shine and then hide for long periods of time, which does not mean it disappears forever; at any moment, we can return to distinguish its distant features in new and diverse trends.

According to that which is manifested and  the interaction of the semiotic systems, it would be fair to say that “a style is the echo of other styles.”

6. The audiovisual product

The audiovisual conforms a model element within the cultural mechanism of a society. When I write “model” I mean its particularity to “shape” the world of the viewer.

Tying the ends of previous exposures, and bringing over to this  context some of the precepts of the semiologist Yuri Lotman, I will conclude that the audiovisual product can only be understood,  by the intricate links with which it maintains in the systems of signs that make up the culture. Lotman asserted that culture could be studied as a text; in my opinion, we could also do so with the audiovisual product, considering it “a text within a more complex text.” The audiovisual product and text are generators of new senses or feelings.

“It is precisely in this creative game where the videographer fuses the social with his aesthetic concepts; this is why when perception of the environment, and  inventiveness is hardened, and  only proposes to reproduce established tendencies in other societies without the intervention of  discernment, its playful activity runs the risk of being undermined of empty intentionality unknown to the society which has made its development possible,  and the image is exposed to the depreciation of its  condition. In which case, by disconnecting the particular creation from it’s social symbolism, it ceases to amaze, and perhaps also to thrill. “
