All April long, Los Angeles presents a variety of visual culture as the 7th annual MoPLA comes through town, bringing with it a month of of photo exhibitions, events, and workshops. Here are just a few .

Month of Photography’s two-fold mission is to advance dynamic programming designed to engage and stimulate the photography community, as well as to present a comprehensive resource of exhibitions and events in April.

“How on earth did he get that shot?”  The Stand-Ins is an exhibition devoted exclusively to answering that question—to the portraits and still life images that come before that shot we all end up marveling at. Curated by Amy Feitelberg, Los Angeles Magazine’s Photo Director, the exhibition celebrates the moment before the moment—the all-important lighting test.

WE SHALL OVERCOME: DOCUMENTING THE ROAD TO FREEDOM- PHOTOGRAPHS BY DANNY LYON, STEVE SCHAPIRO, FLIP SCHULKE, & STEPHEN SOMERSTEIN. A moving exhibition that follows the journey of four world-renowned documentary photographers, Danny Lyon, Steve Schapiro, Flip Schulke, and Stephen Somerstein, as they capture the Civil Rights movement in the American South in the 1960’s. “The exhibition focuses specifically on the historic 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama to demand free-and-clear voting rights for African Americans. These powerful photographs capture the heroes of the Civil Rights movement–Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and James Baldwin, but also the countless grass-roots organizers and anonymous marchers who risked everything to trudge a long, dusty, and violent path to equality.” – Fahey/Klein

Photography was founded on and developed as a result of experimentation: it is a technology-based practice rife with inherent uncertainties, despite its reputation for reliably documenting reality. This installation celebrates the curatorial drive informing over 50 years of collecting at LACMA, which embraces experimentation in photography.

From works by the medium’s earliest practitioners to those by contemporary artists, LACMA’s collection is rich in innovative examples of what is often referred to as “the magic of photography.” As lenses evolve and choices of final output increase, photographic practice will no doubt continue to inspire new ways of perceiving, seeing, and believing.
