Después de más de medio siglo de profesión, Alberto Schommer ha recibido el Premio Nacional de Fotografía 2013. es la primera vez que se otorga a un fotógrafo que se encuentra al final de su carrera.

La obra de este gran fotógrafo español ha sido expuesta en numerosos países y ha sido publicada por las revistas más prestigiosas del panorama internacional y ha publicado más de setenta libros que recogen reportajes realizados durante sus viajes por el mundo. En 1996 ingresó en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando y en 2009 el Ministerio de Cultura le concedió la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes.

Alberto Schommer se introdujo en la fotografía de mano de su padre, Alberto Schommer Koch, alemán afincado en Vitoria, ciudad en la que abrió un estudio durante la década de los 40. Actualmente es un fotógrafo de reconocido prestigio al cual el gobierno español otorgó la Medalla al mérito de las Bellas Artes 2008 y el Premio Nacional de Fotografía 2013.  Su obra se ha expuesto a lo ancho de todo el mundo, desde Japón a Estados Unidos (Centro para la fotografía creativa de Tucson) y ha recibido importantes y numerosos premios a su labor.

• Spanish photographer Alberto Schommer was born in Vitoria in 1928, the son of a German photographer settled there, and moved to Madrid in 1966, where he quickly became famous. He received the prize for the best industrial documentary in 1971 and three years later held two large exhibitions, ‘La dulce violencia’ and ‘Tierra fermentada’. He was named photographer of the year in 1979. Schommer’s photographic work reflects the history of Spain, and the décor, clothes, make-up and objects play an important role in his portraits, as he believes that photography provides a true record of the times. Among his best known works are ‘Psychological Portraits’, ‘Discoveries’, ‘Masks’ and ‘Attitudes’. His ‘Schommer Documents’ (1996) is a visual chronicle of his 20 years of living in Spain since 1975.

Throughout his professional career he has received countless awards and has published more than 70 books which bring together the reports he wrote during his travels across the world.
