Petition against cloud shift has gathered 15,500 signatures
–Small businesses, freelancers among leading critics of change
–Adobe says cloud puts innovation in customers’ hands more quickly
The maker of software for graphic artists and photographers said it will no longer offer new versions of the popular software and issue future updates only through its Creative Cloud subscription service. Adobe doesn’t plan future packaged versions beyond Creative Suite 6.0, its current set of design software, although it will continue selling and supporting that product. Retailers already sell subscriptions to the online service.
Adobe is signing up about 12,000 new members to its Creative Cloud online service weekly and in the past week a similar number of people have signed a petition opposing it.
The petition on the Web site Change.org has gathered 15,500 signatures of people opposed to what it describes as a “mandatory” subscription to continue accessing Adobe’s creative software. The petition claims the pricing model is too costly for freelancers and consumers. Petition organizer Derek Schoffstall of Harrisburg, Pa., argues “paying a one-time fee for infinite access is a much better business model and is better for the consumer.”
A number of petition signers asked Adobe to resume issuing future editions of Creative Suite, which would be less costly for freelancers and small businesses that rely on the software.
“A successful outcome from the petition would be if Adobe took into consideration all of the feedback,” Mr. Schoffstall said in an email response to questions. Lacking that, he said, “If there ever was a time for competition to enter the market, now is it.”
Adobe is offering existing Creative Suite customers discounts of about 40% on the first year of service. After that an annual contract costs $50 a month. Off the shelf, the standard design edition of Creative Suite 6.0 retails for $1,299. The cost of a subscription would exceed the packaged cost after two years.
