As a photographer, I’m always looking for ways to satisfy my ever increasing thirst for knowledge on the creative, technical and business side of my field. The Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) convention and tradeshow in Las Vegas is by far one of the most educational events held annually for those who attend. With over 300 vendors, and 75 guest speakers, there is something to help inspire, and spark the imagination of the creative mind of every attendee.
Sunday was the much anticipated Sony Fashion Show, hosted by Nigel Barker. His entrance was greeted with much applause, as he is known as one of the top fashion photographers in the world. He spoke about his sponsor and his preferred camera of choice, Sony. As the models entered the room, you could see the cameras raise, and photographers happily snap away. For many, this was their very first fashion show.
Monday was an exciting day for those who entered the print competition. All of the prints that scored 80 and above received an Award of Excellence Accolade and was showcased. It was a great feeling walking down the isles and seeing on display all of the beautiful and well-crafted images from photographers all over the world.
With platform classes ranging from business to weddings, presented in both English and in Spanish, there was something for everyone. Each room was filled with captivated listeners who were eager to better their craft. I was incredibly excited to see my friend and mentor, Ramiro Gaytan, speak at the event for the first time. His love for photography and his will to help others was evident in his presentation to a packed room.
The trade show floor was filled with so many “toys and goodies” that I could hardly contain myself from touching it all. Vendors both veteran and new, displayed an impressive array of the latest and greatest in camera gear, business tools, and accessories. Several booths also included speakers impressed enough about their products to speak on their behalf and endorse them.
WPPI 2011 was certainly an enjoyable and educational experience in every sense of the word. If you haven’t had a chance to attend, I highly recommend that you do. Your eyes will widen from the vast array of products offered on the trade show floor. Your heart will be inspired to think, and shoot more creatively. And your mind will burst with new ideas to help you grow in your business.
